Petroglyph Lake - Hart Mountain National Antelope Refuge

Location: The Petroglyph Lake Trailhead is located on Hart Mountain Road one mile northeast of the Refuge Visitor Center. From the trailhead at sign "Petroglyph Lake" hike 1.6 miles to the lake. Why Go There? An easy stroll though it is cross country, to see petroglyphs along the lake's south rim rock outcroppings. Respect and leave petroglyphs as you found them. As with any hike, especially cross country, wear appropriate clothes, watch for rattlesnakes and make note of your starting location, so you can return.

Steens Mountain - Frenchglen

Road opens mid-late June after snow is cleared until snow causes closure
Location: From Frenchglen (Northern loop traverse) head southeast on OR-205 South (0.2 mi, slight left .02 mile, continue onto Steens Mountain Loop 2.8 mi, turn left toward Fish Lake Road/Steens Mountain Loop
Why Go There? There are several short and longer hikes along the seasonally available, scenic winding 59 mile Steens loop road. Well worth a full day of exploring, starting from the Northern loop traverse, Kiger Gorge, East Rim and walks up to the Summit, all signed, are good, short leg stretchers with far reaching views on clear days. A steep hike to the pretty, visible-from-the-road Wildhorse lake is an option, but the trail may be obliterated by snow early, late in the season. Descending west offers views, short trails into the picturesque canyons of Big Indian Gorge and Little Blitzen Gorge and cross Donner and Blitzen River back to OR-205.
