Beautiful scenery, noteworthy agricultural products (especially wine, beer, pears, berries, cheese), hiking trails, Rogue river rafting, manicured parks and hot springs appeal to locals, visitors alike. Live theater fans enjoy the Ashland Oregon Shakespeare Festival, which has spawned other theater venues, restaurants, boutique shops, art galleries, and network of bed and breakfast inn/lodging choices. A respected university hosts music, art and drama events. The quieter winter season provides skiing opportunities on nearby Mt. Ashland; the Pacific Crest trail abounds with hikers before/after snow season.
North of Ashland, numerous activities in Douglas, Jackson and Josephine counties include theater, music, art, wineries, breweries, many seasonal events. Scenic North Umpqua River area east of Roseburg features beautiful waterfalls, river trails, wildflowers, a popular rustic inn with noteworthy food; leads to a northern entrance to Oregon's only national park: Crater Lake (during months not blocked by snow).
