The Columbia Gorge National Scenic Area contains numerous beautiful waterfalls, (including spectacular several hundred feet tall Multnomah Falls), miles of hiking trails, sweeping views of the Columbia River, steep canyons along the river, breathtaking views of Mt. Hood and Mt. Adams). For thousands of years indigenous peoples lived and gathered in the area to fish salmon, trade, socialize . Many descendants continue to live in the area. As European, Asian immigrants settled, they began farming, cutting timber, built towns. Today Hood River is known as a prime windsurfing area; tourists visit local fruit orchards (primarily apples, cherries, pears), enjoy nature, scenery and sport activities, especially hiking, skiing, boating, windsurfing.
